When is the time to get a new flag?

In the Section 8 of the Flag Code, how to dispose a worn out flag is clearly explained. “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

A small tear can be repaired by someone skilled at sewing. If it’s dirty, it can be washed. If those are not the case, here are the signs that your flag may be ready for replacement:

• The colors are faded

• Clearly frayed edges

• Permanent stains that are visible from distance

• Holes or tears beyond repair
