Historic Bear Flag was first flown at Sonoma on June 14, 1846, by a group of Americans against the Mexican rule. The flag was designed by William Todd. The star was the imitation of the lone star of Texas. The grizzly bear represented the famous bears seen in the state. “California Republic” word was placed under the star and bear. According to California Blue Book, It was adopted as the State Flag by the 1911 State Legislature.
