African Americans’ culture and history are represented by the ethnic flag known as the Black American Heritage Flag 1967. In order to promote pride in Black Americans and give them a symbol of hope for the future throughout the Civil Rights movement, each color and emblem on the flag has a significant purpose. In 1967, Melvin Charles and Gleason T. Jackson designed the flag. The blood that African Americans sacrificed for freedom and equality in America is symbolized by the color red. The color black symbolizes pride in the black race. The color gold is a symbol of wisdom, wealth, and harmony. The fig wreath represents peace, wealth, and eternal life, while the blind sword invokes pride.
