The Los Angeles City Flag has a red, gold, and green backdrop with three notched stripes. For the 100th anniversary of Los Angeles’ founding in 1781, the flag was created in 1931 by Roy E. Silent and ES Jones. The olive trees (green), orange orchards (gold), and vineyards (red) are all depicted by the flag’s three colors. Gold and red are other representations of the city’s history; they stand both Mexico, which seized control when New Spain attained independence, and Spain, which founded the city. In the center of the flag lies the municipal seal. Three prominent Californian crops, including grapes, olives, and oranges, are shown around the shield. A heraldic shield split into four pieces appears on the seal. The aspect ratio of the flag is 3×5.
