Maryland Flags is made of the arms of the Calvert and Crossland families. Calvert family name belonged to the Lords Baltimore who founded Maryland, and the colors of gold and black are placed in the first and fourth quarters of the state flag. Crossland name was the family of the mother of George Calvert, first Lord of Baltimore. The red and white Crossland family colors, with a cross bottony, appear in the second and third quarters. Maryland state flag was first flown in October 11, 1880, in Baltimore at a parade celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Baltimore. It also was flown in October 25, 1888, at Gettysburg Battlefield for ceremonies dedicated to the Army of the Potomac. Officially, it was finally adopted in 1904 as the State flag.
