The Mozambique Flag was adopted in 1983 after the country gained independence from Portugal. The design of the flag is based on the flag of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), which was the dominant political party during the country’s struggle for independence. The flag features three horizontal stripes: green at the top, symbolizing the country’s agriculture and natural resources, black in the middle, representing the African continent, and yellow at the bottom, symbolizing Mozambique’s mineral wealth. In the left center of the flag is a red isosceles triangle, symbolizing the country’s struggle for independence. Within the triangle is a yellow star, representing socialism, and a book and a hoe, symbolizing education and agriculture, respectively.
