The Nauru Flag consists of a blue background with a horizontal gold stripe across the middle. In the center of the gold stripe is a white 12-pointed star. The blue represents the Pacific Ocean, which surrounds the island nation, while the gold represents the wealth of Nauru, which was once a major producer of phosphate. The star represents the 12 tribes of Nauru and also symbolizes the country’s location in the southern hemisphere, with the points representing the island’s position relative to the sun and the phases of the moon. The flag was adopted on independence day, January 31, 1968.
