The Nicaragua Flag consists of three horizontal stripes, with the top and bottom stripes colored blue and the middle stripe colored white. Centered on the white stripe is the national coat of arms featuring an equilateral triangle, which represents equality, liberty, and fraternity, as well as five volcanoes symbolizing the five Central American countries. The triangle is also surrounded by two green rays representing hope and vegetation, and a red Phrygian cap symbolizing the fight for freedom. The blue stripes represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, while the white stripe represents the land between them. The current design of the flag was adopted on August 27, 1971, but the flag has undergone several modifications since its first adoption in 1823.
