The Norfolk Flag is a symbol with deep historical roots. Its design is based on the banner of arms attributed to Ralph de Gael, the first Earl of Norfolk, dating back to the 12th century. The design has been associated with the county of Norfolk ever since, appearing on maps, books, and the county council arms awarded in 1904. The ermine bend, a diagonal stripe from top left to bottom right, is thought to be a reference to Brittany, where Ralph was Lord of Gaël. The dukes of Brittany bore a shield of plain ermine, and this pattern appears in much Breton heraldry, including the regional flag.
