Papua New Guinea Flag

(1 customer review)

The Papua New Guinea Flag is divided diagonally from the upper hoist-side corner to the lower fly-side corner. The upper triangle is red with the image of the Raggiana bird-of-paradise, a colorful bird found in the country’s forests and considered a symbol of tribal beauty and wealth. The lower triangle is black and features the Southern Cross, a constellation of four larger five-pointed white stars and one smaller white star, representing the country’s connection to Australia and other nations in the Southern Hemisphere. The colors of the flag, red, black, and white, hold cultural significance to the people of Papua New Guinea, with red representing the country’s wealth and bloodshed, black representing the people and their connection to the land, and white representing the purity of the country’s aspirations for the future. The flag was adopted on July 1, 1971, when Papua New Guinea gained independence from Australia.
