The Rutland Flag is a symbol of the smallest county in England, Rutland, and features a green background with a gold horseshoe shape in the center, pointing upwards, and an acorn above it. The horseshoe has been a traditional symbol of Oakham, the county town, since the time of William the Conqueror, and represents the town’s equestrian heritage. The acorn represents the former forest that once covered much of the county, as well as the small yet important nature of Rutland. The green field represents the county’s agriculture, specifically its rich pastureland. The orientation of the horseshoe is in accordance with tradition in the county, and the horseshoes in Oakham Castle, which were forfeits claimed by the Lord of the Manor, are hung with the points upwards.
