The San Francisco City Flag is the official municipal flag. A phoenix symbol rising in the center of the flag is often assumed to refer to the city’s recovery from the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires. The San Francisco City and County Board of Supervisors adopted the current flag on December 16, 1940. The design is a white space with a yellow border with a phoenix rising from the flames in the center. In the strip below, “Oro en paz. Fierro en guerra.” and the blue “SAN FRANCISCO” text at the bottom.
